Biodiesel from canola oil - Data inputs was created by clarice.vassallo
I am using the 4.03a version of GHGenius to calculate the associated emissions of production of biodiesel from canola oil feedstock. I would like to verify if I should input data on alternative fuel production and transportation of the biodiesel as follow:

Input tab
>AA92 to AA102 - (Canola) Input data for transportation of biodiesel (finished fuel)
>AF232 to AF241 (Crushing Canola) - Input related data for canola oil production
>BH 232 to BH 241 (HRD Canola Oil) - Input related data for canola oil Biodiesel production[/li]

Alt Fuel tab
> BN column (HRD Canola oil) input related data for Canola oil

Also, where could I find the emissions from canola oil biodiesel fuel use?

Thank you very much!

You've identified many of the inputs for HRD from canola oil. I would caution that this is a different fuel from biodiesel. It goes by a number of names, HRD, HDRD, HVO, and renewable diesel are common names for it.

Crushing Canola
Both pathways use the same crushing pathway.
  • Transportation of seed is in the range K78:K88 on the Input sheet.
  • Transportation of the oil, after crushing, is in the range L78:L88 on the Input sheet.
  • You've identified the crushing emissions in AF234:AF241 on the Input sheet.
  • There may be additional chemical inputs for crushing. These are found on the Alt Fuel Prod sheet in the range AN29:AN51.

Biodiesel
  • Transportation of the finished fuel is in the range AA92:AA102 on the Input sheet.
  • Energy inputs for esterification, production of the biodiesel, are in the range AL234:AL241 on the Input sheet.
  • Further chemical inputs for biodiesel production are on the Alt Fuel Prod sheet in the range AO29:AO51.
  • Coproducts produced can be modified on the Coprods sheet. Different forms of glycerine are in the range Y99:Y102. Propylene Glycol is in cell Y109.

HRD
  • First and foremost, HRD is one of a handful of switched pathways, and you must set the feedstock on the Input sheet in cell B50.
  • Transportation of the finished fuel is in the range AK92:AK102 on the Input sheet.
  • Energy inputs for the production of HRD are in the range BH234:BH241 on the Input sheet.
  • Further chemical inputs for HRD production are on the Alt Fuel Prod sheet in the range BN29:BN51.
  • Coproducts produced can be modified on the Coprods sheet. HRD commonly produces some gaseous and liquid fuels, which are in cells AO106 and AO 108 respectively.

Fuel Use Emissions
These can be found on the Exhaust Emissions sheet. For a biobased pathway like biodiesel and HRD you should be looking at the net CO2e emissions on row 143. Specifically canola based biodiesel is in cell F143 and HRD is in cell E143.

Thank you very much for your response! Regarding chemical inputs on the Alt Fuel Prod. In the case I want to use the default values, should I change the year on cells AO6 (for biodiesel), and AN6 (for crushing canola)?

thank you again,

Clarice

Cells AO6 and AN6 are linked to the Input sheet, row 234. There are improvement factors for the energy and canola for canola crushing so inputting the year in row 234 is important for obtaining accurate results for canola crushing. However, there are no improvement factors in the model for biodiesel production or for any of the chemicals for canola crushing or biodiesel production.

States another way, the model will use the default values for chemicals no matter what year you use in row 234.
