 GHGenius 3.16 and Two New Reports Posted

The latest version of GHGenius has now been posted to the website. The changes to the model are described in two new reports, one describing the addition of Algae and Jatropha as biodiesel feedstocks and the other report detailing the updates made to the data and structure of the model.

The model is available in the Download section of the website.

 New Model and Reports

Version 3.15 of GHGenius has now been posted and is available for download.

There are two reports that accompany this version. One describes the default values for the "Provincial" versions of the model and the other describes the changes made to the model to add two biomethane pathways. One of the biomethane pathways utilizes purified landfill gas and the other involves the anaerobic digestion of manure and agricultural residues.

 GHGenius Workshops

The Office of Energy Efficiency of Natural Resources Canada is pleased to invite you to a selection of stand alone one-day users workshop on the GHGenius life cycle model . The workshops will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2009 in Edmonton, Alberta; Friday, March 6, 2009 in Calgary, Alberta; and Thursday, March 12, 2009 in Toronto, Ontario. You will need to indicate which workshop you are interested in attending if you are interested in reserving a spot.

While the workshop is offered at no charge to participants, space is limited to a maximum of 40 people for each workshop. After the 40 spaces are filled you will be placed on a waiting list in case someone cancels. If demand is high we reserve the right to limit the number of people from any single organization. Please note that there will only be a few spaces available for the Calgary workshop as those that were registered for a postponed workshop from the fall are being given priority.

name;
affiliation;

preferred email address; and
preferred date and location.

Ms. Murphy is in the office part time but will send you a confirmation as soon as possible.

 Updated Version of 3.14 Posted

An update to model version 3.14 has been posted. The new version is 3.14a. It corrects a problem with the density of bitumen used in the calculations on sheet S and the calculation of the carbon content of Still gas on sheet E.

Version 3.13 of the model has been posted along with the accompanying report. There are a number of enhancements in this version including expanded capacity for modelling oil sands, regional emission factors for N2O emissions, and enhanced land use calculations.

The model is available in the Download section and the report in the Reports section of the website.

There will be a workshop on the GHGenius life cycle emissions model on Tuesday, April 29 in Winnipeg and another on Thursday May 1 in Regina. The presentations are organised by Natural Resources Canada, local partners (Winnipeg: The Centre for Sustainable Transportation at the University of Winnipeg, The Red River Valley Clean Cities Coalition of Winnipeg Chapter Inc., and The City of Winnipeg’s Fleet Management Agency, and Regina:The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment) and their consultant Don O'Connor of (S&T)2 Consultants Inc.

These workshops will be of interest to a wide variety of audiences. The morning session will focus on a higher level of understanding relative to lifecycle assessment of transportation fuels in general and also of the GHGenius model itself.  GHGenius 3.5 Now Available

A new version of GHGenius has been made available, along with an accompanying report.

The main addition to this version is a tool to run Monte Carlo simulations without the need of an external program. Please read the Monte Carlo report before using the new version to learn how to use this new tool.

 GHGenius 3.3 Now Available

A new version of GHGenius is now available for downloading.

The primary new addition to the model has been the ability to model carbon capture and storage to the power generation, some of the alternative fuel production, the oil refining and the bitumen and syncrude oil production pathways.

A report concerning CCS is also now available for download.

 Revisions to GHGenius 3.0

Several small errors have been fixed in the Excel version of GHGenius released in September. The version that is currently available for downloading is 3.0c.

A new version should be available in February. It will have India added as a country, ethanol from sugar cane, heavy-duty gasoline vehicles, plug in hybrids, more flexibility for modelling other classes of HD trucks, updated information on materials, and a few other updates.

The Excel version of GHGenius has now been posted in the Downloads section of the website.

This version of the model also uses metric units and has several new features including; lifecycle emission results presented per unit of fuel, a sensitivity tool to run the model multiple times through a user specified range of inputs, and the energy balance results presented for both total energy input and fossil energy input.

The manual that accompanies this version of the model is available in the Reports section of the website.

An error has been identified in the wood to ethanol pathway resulting from the addition of the additional co-products in version 2.6 of the model. That has now been corrected and version 2.6a is now available for download.

 New Version of Model Posted

The newest version of GHGenius has been posted. This is version 2.6 and it includes new biodiesel pathways and updates to the ethanol pathways. New data on light duty vehicle emissions and on fertilizer production is included in the model. The approach to calculating the cost effectiveness calculations has been slightly modified.

 Two New Reports Posted

Two new reports have been posted to the site. The first is an update of the GHG cost effectiveness calculations. The report describes an updated procedure along with updated costs for many of the fuels and vehicles. Results are presented along with some sensitivity analysis.

The second report is an update of the ethanol production pathways. New co-products have been added for all pathways and all of the significant input data is reviewed and discussed. Results and sensitivity of the results to the input variables are discussed.

The new version of GHGenius (V2.6) will be posted shortly.

A report on the updated exhaust emissions calculated by GHGenius has now been posted to the reports section. This report used data from MOBILE6.2C to create new equations for GHGenius.

This is part of the updating work for the new 2.6 version of GHGenius that will be available late in March 2005.

 Biofuels Reports

Two new reports are available for downloading. These are the Phase 1 reports on ethanol and biodiesel for the NRCan project entitled "Economic, Financial, Social Analysis and Public Policy for Biofuels".

Phase 2 of this work will consider the GHG emissions of these fuels.

 Marine Based Biodiesel Report Now Available

A new fuel pathway has been added to GHGenius, the production of biodiesel from marine based oils. The report covers a generic process and a specific unique process that uses ethanol rather than methanol in the process.

A number of updates to the model are underway and the revised model with this pathway and the other updates will be made available early in 2005. Some of the updates include a review of the input data for biodiesel production, updating the light duty vehicle emissions using Mobile6.2C, a data review for ethanol production and additional co-products, a review of the cost-effectiveness calculations.
